Post Hawaii Update

Hawaii was amazing and everything I hoped it would be, except for getting a major sunburn because of my own stupidity. I didn't have a chance to blog while i was there, so I'll give a full running update for all who bother to read this. Before we left very early Saturday morning (4:30am) I managed to get two runs in on Friday. I ran for an hour before work, and then again for an hour afterwards. I ran just under 7 in the first hour, and just over 7 in the second hour. Surprisingly, I felt very good during the second run. I was worried the second run in the same day would be awful, but it went really well. So, over the course of two runs, I ran a little over 14 miles in 2 hours. I also finished the second run with several accells just do give my legs a little speed work since I skipped my track workout.

Well, my goal in Hawaii was to run three times and I did it. The first two runs were for about 45 minutes each and I probably ran about 5 miles each time. The runs were great though. I ran in the early evening as the sun was starting to set and it was a little cooler. I ran along bike paths that go right along the beach and I must say if I lived in Hawaii I think I would enjoy my runs much more. It was beautiful and relaxing to run along the ocean and listen to waves crashing on the shore.

THe third run in Hawaii was the Banana Man Chase 5k race I found out about in a beach park close to our hotel. I registered Saturday morning just before the race started. The race starts with several guys dressed up in these ridiculous banana suit costumes. They all start 30 seconds before everyone else, and the goal of the race is to chase them down and beat as many of them as possible (at least that was my goal). I think I passed three of them, but in my eagerness to pass the Banana Men, I started a little too quick (6:10 first mile), and had to back off during the second (7:00) so I could try and finish strong. I ran 6:00 last mile and Slettenized the last 0.1 to finish at 19:40. I was happy to break 20 minutes but my body is not used to maintaining a quick pace for any amount of time. I was completely wasted at the end, but it was a fun 5k.

So now I'm back home and not looking forward to being back at work and running my old routes again, but I will persist. Hopefully, last week without any long runs won't throw me back too much. I am looking forward to not having to do my long run alone this week thanks to Justus.

Summary of all runs since my last blog:

6.9 miles 60 minutes
7.3 miles, 60 minutes
5 miles, 45 minutes
5 miles, 45 minutes
3.1 miles, 19:40
